Sustainable Coffee Bay’s High School Scholarship Program was the brain child of Coffee Shack Backpackers. In 2011, Sustainable Coffee Bay was registered as the non-profit organisation that took over the projects. We maintain a close relationship with our original founders and discovered these wonderful stories in our archives. Please enjoy our short quarterly student tales..
Noluvo Vulindlela – sponsored by Torsten Tabel  (2008-2009) and Christian Andreas (2010)
This quarter we are bringing you a story of Noluvo Vulindlela Noluvo is one of four children and her mother has a cooking job at the local school. She has no father.  Noluvo attended school at St Johns College through our high School Scholarship. Noluvo was doing Tourism stream but she struggled a little bit with maths so she attended extra classes, Because she worked hard she passed her metric. After metric, Noluvo applied for a Tourism bursary through Sustainable Coffee Bay. She then got her One year Tourism qualification at South African Collage of Tourism. And secured a job as a bar lady at Coffee Shack after working for 2 years at Coffee Shack she then resigned and went back to University to study Education. Noluvo is now doing her final year of University. She has done so well for herself to beat the odds she is a role model to young girls in Coffee Bay. Way to go Teacher Vulindlela!.
Spring Updates
Spring has sprung! At Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori in Coffee Bay. Not only with an array of colourful flowers but also with an abundance of new life: puppies, piglets, calves, goslings, chicks and butterflies. New life a brought new activities on our shelves.

Theme for the term

Our theme for this term was sewing. With all the indirect preparation of threading large, medium, small beads. Most of the children were quiet comfortable with working with the needle. Next presentations on threading a needle ad typing a knot followed. The first basic sewing activity was sewing a pattern on a punched paper plate with a darning needle and wool, this was followed by more advanced sewing, namely: pattern on a tapestry squares. Soon we will be sewing on buttons and simple embroidery.

The benefits of these sewing exercises are numerous, the obvious benefits is the development of small motor coordination. Threading a needle and looking for the right hole for every stitches a skill that comes with practise. Concepts like up to the ceiling and down to the floor, next hole long or short pieces of wool, thick or thin wool, the colour of the wool the circle or rectangle made by stitches and tight or loose stitches helped to bring language into the activity. These activities also give teach the children to learn to follow instruction in a second language English.
Furthermore sewing is an activity that promotes concentration while also giving the children a sense of contentment because they are creating something. For our school leavers that are going to grade 1 next year spring heralds a new season in their lives. Our children are well prepared for mainstream education but the end of the third term and the last term is the time for tweaking. Working on letter and number information, building words in Xhosa and English , perfecting cutting skills, building 50 pieces puzzles, working with the decimal system and doing addition and subtraction are some of the activities that our school leavers are focusing on.

Music and the children have been working tirelessly in our beautiful garden. Our mini people know how important it is to plant your own food and the importance of a balanced diet. Some of them didn’t want anything to do with veggies when they started at school but now they enjoy both munching on them and planting them, we are having yet another successful Harvest this term its betroot. All the veggies planted in this garden is part of every day menu at he school.

Sanelise Dasoyi What are your duties at ILM/SCB? I am the Projects Coordinator at Sustainable Coffee Bay How long have you been working at ILM?/SCB? I started in June 2018 so it’s been exactly a year 4 months now What do you enjoy most about your job? Working for Sustainable Coffee bay NPO (SCB) gave me the opportunity to make a difference and be part of creating a lasting impact. I feel like my work is serving a greater purpose and that’s quiet exciting. Do you have a hobby? Yes, I love reading, it makes me feel like i have traveled the world haha How long have you stayed in Coffee Bay? Its been a year now i moved to Coffee Bay when i got the Job at SCB What changes have you noticed in Coffee Bay over the years? Its early for me to see any changes.
