At the end of last term, long-time friend and supporter of Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori, Anick Meister visited us again.  Anick and her 2 Swiss friends, Anna and Angie, arrived with big smiles and bags of stationary for us – Coloured paper, coloured card, white paper, wax crayons, pencil crayon and koki’s – just what we needed a the  end of the term – excellent timing! As you can see, the children are enjoying their new stationary – thank you very much ladies 🙂

At the end of April, it was time for Irene (Directress) and myself to attend the SAMA National Conference in Umhlanga.  The SAMACON theme was “Education for the Nation”.  Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori had a display table and we had photos of the children who need sponsorship on the table with beads and wallets that we were selling for Coffee Bay local community members. Thank you to the 5 new sponsors that we were lucky enough to get at the conference – we really appreciate your support.

The Keynote speaker was Dr Steven Hughes, PhD, LP, ABPdN who is a board-certified pediatric neuropsychologist who specializes in assessment and treatment planning for persons who have problems with attention, concentration, organization, planning, and related executive functions. He is also President of the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology.   He gave excellent talks and I found a quote from Dr Hughes, which sums up his talks perfectly:  “If we decided that the purpose of education should be to help every child’s brain reach its highest developmental potential, we would have to radically rethink school. The task seems insurmountable, yet this work has already been done. In fact, it was done over a hundred years ago. When examined through the lens of environmental enrichment and brain development, Montessori education presents a radically different – and radically effective – educational approach that may be the best method we’ve got to ensure the optimal cognitive, social, and emotional development of every child.”  Www.buildingbetterbrains.com
