Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori was very lucky at the end of 2014, as we received a lovely donation from Explore and Discover Montessori in Cape Town, to have a year-end party for the children – thank you!  Dawn planned the party for Thursday, 4 December 2014, but little did she know what we (the Sustainable Coffee Bay team) had planned for her – BIG surprise!

We had planned the following for the day:   We invited the children and their parents and each of the Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori teachers had been given a group of children to work with. The children had to prepare something for the party.  One of the groups of children demonstrated the I Spy game, another group wrote a special poem for Dawn and the last group did traditional Xhosa dancing – thank you Nomonde for the beautiful skirts! ( Unfortunately the recording of the dancing is too big to put on the blog).

The day was a mixture of emotions, with lots  of tears from Dawn and lots of laughter from the children – because it was party time! Each child was served a delicious boerewors roll and salads, with their very own party pack!

Emotional Dawn

Our sad news was to say good bye to our founding member and principal of Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori, Dawn Brochenin, as she is leaving to go on a well-deserved sabbatical.  Dawn is  well known here as the woman walking up the steep hill to Jonga Village where the school is situated.

A lovely day was enjoyed by all and thank you to all the Ikhaya Labantwana Montessori teachers and trainee teachers for keeping ‘the surprise, a surprise”!

Kind regards

Nola
